INTRODUCING

It's Never Just About the Behaviour: A holistic approach to classroom behaviour management

When writing this book, I kept coming back to one main goal. To empower you to take the action you can take when you walk into your classroom.

To feel supported, confident and equipped to turn your own space into an island of safety and support for each one of your students.

To know that, when challenging behaviours inevitably pop up, you’ll be able to respond to them effectively and calmly.

Allowing you to do the job that you got into the profession to do, and do it damn well.

To teach.

What do teachers really need to know (and do) to confidently mitigate, address, and resolve the sheer volume and complexity of challenging classroom behaviours they face?

In It's Never Just About the Behaviour, I answer this very question.

Behaviour isn′t ever just about the behaviour itself and effective behaviour management isn’t about simply responding to a behaviour. It is about thinking through:

✔️The ′why′ behind the behaviour

✔️The ′what′ is going on in the body and the brain, and

✔️The ′how′ you can proactively craft your pedagogy and practice to support the wellbeing, development and educational experience of all students.

In a nutshell, It's Never Just About the Behaviour gives you the knowledge, strategies, and action that you need to adopt a calm, compassionate, and effective approach to classroom management.

My Most Valuable Resource

"This book has finally helped me navigate the world of classroom management. I feel like as a new teacher I have had so many questions about regarding behavior. This is the only book that has provided answers to my “ambiguous” questions. One of the most helpful things about this book is the actual phrases/conversations modeled for me. I always want very clear examples of things and this book delivered.

This book makes me feel empowered as a teacher. It allows and supports me to create the environment I want for myself and my students. It tells me clear directions of how to turn my room into an island of safety. Going into my second year of teaching I feel 100 times more confident in the type of environment I want to establish and most importantly HOW I can do that!

Such a beautiful book. I cried when it ended because I’ve had such an emotional connection! The strategies I have learned from this book have already made A WORLD of difference to me, in mindset alone!"

The insight I wished I’d had early in my teaching career

"Every university training teachers should have this book on their syllabus.

I’ve been teaching since 2008, and like Claire, I received next to no training on managing or understanding behaviour. “Don’t smile til Christmas”, “Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile” and “copy what your lead teacher does” was pretty much the extent of what I learnt over four years of my teaching degree. Unhelpful and demoralising for me, but catastrophic for my classes who’s behaviour was often escalated further by an absolutely clueless me.

Let me say this, had I had this book I could have saved myself years of trouble, confusion and tears.

Claire’s book is FULL of research and insight that clearly explains the why of behaviour with clear, practical strategies for moving behaviour forward without the need for shouting or punitive measures."

A must read

"I have learnt more about behaviour management from this book than I have across 11 years of teaching!

So much more helpful than any of the training I have ever received - whilst lots of people have previously said about increasing challenge, it just doesn't work as a stand alone and this book lays everything out perfectly. I love all of the helpful 'what does this look like' examples, and since becoming a parent the approach outlined here aligns with the most up-to-date child psychology findings and what I would hope my child will be treated like whilst at school. I hope more teachers read this (and hopefully all of the PGCE / ITT mentors too!)

A must-read for any teacher, new or experienced. (I will also add an extra note that I rarely feel like I have much time for reading, but everything here was laid out so concisely it was an easy read)."

Incredible and insightful

"This book. Wow.

I have been working in an alternative provision setting now for the past 7 years and even in our training, no text or presentation has come close to accurately analysing the how’s and the whys behind what our children do.

I can only imagine the progress we could have made with a resource like this in our portfolio! I would 100% recommend this book for anyone within the education system, anyone that interacts with young people and believes they can make a difference, because we can!"

Meet the author

Hi fellow teachers, I'm Claire!

I am an experienced Australian Secondary English teacher and senior leader, specialising in supporting students with complex social, emotional and mental health needs. Over my career, I have worked across the United Kingdom and Australia, dedicated to transforming volatile, challenging, and chaotic learning environments into places of safety, support, and learning.

With an unwavering belief that in order to champion all students, you must first champion all teachers, I founded The Unteachables Academy, where I am dedicated to providing teachers with the actionable and relevant support, mentorship, and training, they need and deserve!

This book is a tapestry of the millions of micro moments that have shaped me as a teacher. The approximate 15,600 hours spent teaching in a classroom, the hundreds of students who joined me in that space with all of its trials and triumphs, the colleagues who worked alongside me, the leaders who I have learnt from, whether it be from the positive, or the negative. It is such a privilege to bring this to you and walk along side you in your teaching journey.
